Burgess Served in the 46th Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War and Survived the Siege of Sevastopol before Joining the 9th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers as a Captain & Adjutant in 1864. Burgess Went on to Become a Major in the Honourable Artillery Company in 1873.
